I am finding it increasingly difficult to keep the site updated and consequently I am going to sell the site as is. The site can stay on the same webhosting account to make things simpler but there would be a annual charge of £100 for hosting.

Smoking Vaccine On Trial
Neolithic, Saturday 19 July 2008 - 04:56:31 // comment: 0

Scientists in Sweden are trialling a vaccine which could help smokers kick the habit.
In three Nordic countries, 400 people are taking part in the clinical study by Independent Pharmaceutica - a private company based at Stockholm's Karolinska Institute.Chief Executive Lena Degling Wikingsson said: "By vaccination you will induce anti-bodies against nicotine and those anti-bodies will be very specific for nicotine."So when smoking, or taking your relapse cigarette, the anti-bodies will bind or catch the nicotine in the blood. She continued: "Physically it works, you clear your body from nicotine and probably you will get rid of the physical craving. But the mental craving, that will still be there. There is no vaccine against that." According to researchers, the vaccine eliminates the quick high smokers relish by creating antibodies that bind to nicotine molecules, making them too bulky to enter the brain.Independent Pharmaceutica hope to have the vaccine on the market within three years.According to the World Health Organization, tobacco use is the number one preventable cause of death in the world, killing 5.4 million people every year, an increasing proportion of those in low-income countries.Source: ITN

It's that time of year again! New Years Resolutions are everywhere. Can you quit smoking?
Neolithic, Wednesday 02 January 2008 - 17:16:31 // comment: 0

Happy New Year to all! As you will be aware, many people decide to quit smoking in January. New year, new start and all that. Many smokers will fail to quit smoking in the next few days, weeks or months(sorry but it's a fact). If you do not succeed this time don't worry about it too much, just regroup and try a different approach to the problem.

The time has to be right for you to stop smoking. You have to be ready to stop, you must want to stop. Quitting smoking is not something to be taken lightly and is by no means easy but when you succeed the feeling of achievement will keep you going for a long time. I have been smoke free now since 2001 and have no regrets at all.

January is a month to recover from festivities and over indulgence (credit card bills!). I personally don't think it is the best time to add the pressure of giving up cigarettes to the mix. Set yourself a date a little further into the year and prepare yourself to be a non-smoker! Plan your attack, speak to the doctor about medication such as Zyban or Chantix, find a quit smoking clinic near you and ask them if you can sit in on a few sessions before you actually try to quit.

Whenever you decide to quit smoking, I wish you luck.

The Smoking Ban is fast approaching
Neolithic, Sunday 23 December 2007 - 19:02:03 // Comments are turned off for this item

Being a smoker is going to become very difficult with the introduction of the smoking ban on July 1st. You will not be allowed to smoke in virtually all enclosed public places. The aim of the ban is to promote a healthier environment for those that do not smoke and, apparently to encourage people to give up smoking.

I have to be perfectly honest and say I am very relieved to have already quit smoking. I am sure I would be feeling, as many smokers are, pressured and bullied into quitting. If I was a smoker I would be up in arms about the ban, complaining about it being unfair. But the truth is many smokers actually do want to quit and would love to just stop and have done with cigarettes. They carry a ridiculous price tag due to the tax imposed on them and I think many smokers are now ready to make a serious effort to stop smoking.

I was fortunate enough to be prescribed the quit smoking drug Zyban, without which I do not think I would have successfully quit smoking. It seemed to make stopping smoking almost effortless. I sailed through eight weeks of taking the tablets without ever wanting a cigarette. Amazing really when you think I was a 60 cigarettes a day smoker!

Zyban did have some side effects for patients including depression and a little nausea. I personally experienced no ill effects from the drug. As you may be aware there is anew wonder drug on the market now. It seems to carry several different names depending on where you live. These vary from Chantrix, Chantix and even Champix. I think it is to be called Champix in the UK but cannot say for sure.

Availability may be an issue within certain health authorities as you know how restrictive they can be. If you are looking to give up smoking why not contact your GP and ask about availability of Zyban or Chantrix to help you give up the cigarettes. Your doctor may prescribe nicotine patches or gum to help you quit. Now is the time to start planning your strategy and be ready to part company with those cigarettes forever.

You don't really want to stand outside in the winter amidst wind and rain just to have a smoke, do you? Believe me, if I can stop smoking then anyone can. Quitting smoking will be the most satisfying, benficial thing you will do this year and the sense of achievement you will feel cannot be described. You will just have to quit and find out.

Good luck!

How is the ban affecting you?
Neolithic, Sunday 23 December 2007 - 19:01:28 // Comments are turned off for this item

Now the UK smoking ban has been introduced you cannot smoke in enclosed places. How has this affected you? Has it helped you in your quest to quit cigarettes or are you standing in the rain puffing away. From what I have seen so far, smokers are standing in the rain outside pubs and bars to get their nicotine fix.

There may be some confusion about where you can and cannot smoke since the ban started. Visit smokefree england for more detailed information on the new smoking regulations.

Employers are also being encouraged to help employees to quit smoking. Ask your employer what they are offering to help you quit.

Smokers 4 Times More Likely to Quit Using Chantix
Neolithic, Friday 20 April 2007 - 20:00:00 // comment: 0

Chantix (varenicline) can be four times as effective in helping a smoker quit successfully, according to a report in Journal of the American Medical Association. According to the report, which cites three studies, Chantix is twice as effective as Zyban in helping individuals quit smoking.

The chances of having a relapse during the first six months after quitting are significantly reduced when a smoker is on Chantix, according to one study.

Chantix was approved by the FDA in May, 2006.

Chantix works in a different way from Zyban or nicotine replacement therapies. Nicotine replacement therapies give you small doses of nicotine, the aim being to provide the smoker with their drug while they overcome the enormous psychological problems that come with quitting. Zyban undermines the reuptake of addiction linked brain chemicals by neurons - dopamanine and norepinephrine. Chantix makes the patient produce more dopamine, which helps lower the cravings. At the same time, brain cell receptors that help perpetuate addiction are blocked.

One study included 1,025 volunteers, all of them smokers who wanted to quit. Chantix, Zyban and a placebo were compared. The study lasted one year. Here is what they found:

-- 44% of those on Chantix were not smoking at 12 weeks

-- 29.5%% of those on Zyban were not smoking at 12 weeks

-- 18% of those on a placebo were not smoking at 12 weeks

-- 22% of those on Chantix did not smoke from week 9 to 52

-- 16% of those on Zyban did not smoke from week 9 to 52

-- 8.4% of those on a placebo did not smoke from week 9 to 52

Another study, from the Unversity of Wisconsin included 1,027 volunteers, all of them smokers who wanted to quit. Results were almost the same as those found in the previous study

The third study involved people in seven countries - 1,900 smokers who wanted to quit. All of them took Chantix for the first 12 weeks, after which 1,236 (65%) were still not smoking. The 1,236 quitters were then divided into two groups: One group continued taking Chantix while the other took a placebo. This continued for another 12 weeks. At the end of the 24-week period:

-- 70.5% of those on Chantix were not smoking

-- 49.6% of those on a placebo were not smoking

After one year a significantly higher number of those who had been on Chantix were still not smoking compared to those on the placebo.

Chantix has some side effects, which were experienced by about one third of all the volunteers. They included nausea and strange dreams.

Chantix can be found at many online pharmacies, such as BroweMeds Online Pharmacy.

Breaking the Habit - Why Do We Find It So Hard to Quit Smoking?
Neolithic, Friday 12 January 2007 - 18:33:00 // comment: 0

We depend on our habits, the things we have learned so well that we do them unconsciously. You could say that our habits run our lives most of the time. It's not a problem unless we have habits that work against us. They can seem very hard to change. What can we do to stop smoking, feel more confident, stop anxious thoughts, stop undermining ourselves and start to feel more in charge of our lives? In my experience it's a case of getting on the right wavelength to address the problem and, since our habits are unconscious, using an unconscious approach to change them.
